PRIMM, Nev. _ Three Southern Oregon University wrestlers advanced into the semifinals, while four others are still alive in the consolation bracket after Friday's opening day at the NAIA Wrestling National Championships.
The seven remaining Raiders helped their team into sixth place in the team standings with 45 points, 25 points behind leader Montana State Northern.
Matt Paulson (134 pounds), Ryan Escobar (118) and Matt Armstrong (158) will resume their runs for national titles today, while Brian Samhammer (158), Bill Wathen (177), Jamie Haddon (190) and Jamie Dixson (190) are battling for placing spots.
I'm pleased for the guys who are still in, but there were some disappointments today, said Southern Oregon coach Mike Ritchey. We went out on a high note, winning our last four matches of the day.
Escobar, a freshman, won three matches on Friday and will meet top-seeded Beau Vest of Missouri Valley.
It was an outstanding performance by him, said Ritchey. He may be our first freshman ever to make it into the semis. We kind of expected him to do this, but he has a good challenge tomorrow.
Armstrong, who won both his matches on Friday, will face No. — seed Ryan Henry of Montana State Northern, but the most intriguing of SOU's three semifinal matches involves Paulson. The Raiders' lone No. — seed will meet Chad Edgar of Montana State Northern.
Edgar and Paulson were teammates in junior college at Northern Idaho.
I think he's on form at this point, said Ritchey of Paulson, who had two convincing victories on Friday. His match will be a tough one because the two of them know each other so well.
Even though his squad's chances of winning the national team title are slim, Ritchey remains pleased with their effort.
We could be higher if we would have gotten some more breaks, said Ritchey. We'll keep plugging along. I'm not jumping up and down, but I'm not crying myself to sleep tonight.
