Barbara Milbourne Harrington Rosentreter

Barbara passed peacefully at home on Sunday, August 6, 2006 at the age of 82.

She was born on April 13, 1924 and grew up in Brooklyn, New York. After graduating from Bay Ridge High School, she attended Brooklyn College. She went on to the University of Wisconsin, where in 1946, she earned her MA in English. Following graduation, she was offered a position with the Extension Division at the University of Wisconsin.

While there she met Fred Rosentreter, and they married on June 11, 1950 in Brooklyn, N.Y. In 1954 they moved to Natchitoches, Louisiana, where they both taught at Northwestern State University, until 1961, when they moved to Ashland, Oregon. Barbara and Fred taught at Southern Oregon College until their retirement in 1985. For a few years in the 1960's she also taught Extension classes in Klamath Falls, OR. She was respected among her colleagues, and students from the past still remark on how much they learned from and enjoyed her classes.

Twice she and Fred spent a year as exchange professors at Dankook University in Seoul, Korea. In Dankook Barbara taught English as a second language and one year at Dankook produced Shakespeare's Hamlet with her Korean drama students. In addition, she and her husband traveled extensively throughout Asia, Europe, Central America and the former Soviet Union.

She was an active member of Oregon Shakespeare Festival Tudor Guild for 30 years and volunteered for Britt Festival and Meals on Wheels. Barbara was a dedicated member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Ashland.

Although her love of teaching kept her busy, Barbara was very devoted to her family and always took loving care of them. She loved traveling, reading and hosting dinners in her home for friends and international visitors. Trips to the Oregon coast with her family and friends were a favorite activity. A dear college friend of hers said, She will always be remembered as full of vim, vigor and vitality. She led a full life enriched with experiences and love.

She is survived by her son Eric Rosentreter of Portland, Oregon and her daughter Kirsten Couch and son-in-law Jason of Ashland.

Her husband, a brother and a sister preceded her in death.

A memorial service will be held at — p.m. Wednesday September 13, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 44 N. 2nd St. in Ashland. Rev. Anne Bartlett will officiate.

Remembrances may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church or to Trinity Respite Center.
