Camp Cook cookoff in Yreka

Mark Freeman

YREKA, Calif. — So, you make a mean deer stew and cornbread? Is your Dutch oven the most popular and productive member of your Elk Camp?

Siskiyou County is throwing down the gauntlet and asking the best hunting-camp cooks of the State of Jefferson to come forward in a new contest.

The PremierWest Bank Siskiyou Sportsmen's Expo is sporting its inaugural camp-cook competition during the March 17 event at Siskiyou Golden Fairgrounds.

And they're not talking Pop Tarts or MRE's.

"These guys all go off to Buck Camp and think they're the greatest cooks on earth," says Siskiyou Golden Fairgrounds CEO Rebecca Desmond. "We're excited to see it."

The best dish among pre-registered cooks will win a Weber Genesis barbecue worth $400.

The cook-off will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the expo. There is a $15 entry fee, which includes two tickets to the expo, and the entry deadline is Monday.

Contestants must provide their own heat source, do all food preparation on-site, and provide enough food for five judges.

"Even if we only get five or six (entrants) the first year, that's fine," Desmond says. "That's manageable."

Desmond says she hopes this will be an annual event.

A full set of rules is available with the entry forms. Entry forms are available at all PremierWest Bank branches and at the fair office in Yreka.

Admission to the expo is $3 for adults and kids age 12 and under are free.

For expo and vendor information, contact the Siskiyou Golden Fairgrounds office at 842-2767 or info@sisqfair.com.
