EUGENE — Kevin Love recorded 41 points and 21 rebounds in Lake Oswego's 60-33 victory against Westview in a quarterfinal game at the OSAA Class 6A boys basketball tournament at McArthur Court.
Love, who was removed with five minutes left in the game, is now just three points shy of setting the Oregon prep basketball scoring record of 2,584 career points held by Bob "Pudgy" Hunt.
The UCLA-bound senior center will have a chance to breaking that mark today when the top-ranked Lakers (25-1) meet Sheldon in one semifinal game. Lake Oswego is the defending state champion.
Love scored 23 points in the second half, including 16 straight in the third quarter as Lake Oswego outscored the Wildcats 28-4 to turn a 27-17 halftime lead into a 45-21 advantage.
Tim Johnson scored nine to lead fifth-ranked Westview (21-6), while Andy Poling, the Wildcats' star post player who has verbally committed to Gonzaga, fouled out with 1:15 left in the third quarter after scoring just six points.
u SHELDON 60, MCKAY 49 — At Eugene, Blake Poole scored 18 points to lead sixth-ranked Sheldon to a victory against McKay in a quarterfinal game of the Class 6A boys tournament.
Poole was 7 of 10 from the field, 6-for-10 from the free-throw line and grabbed eight rebounds for the Irish (21-6), who are playing in their first state tournament since 1998. They also advanced to the semifinals that season.
u JESUIT 54, CANBY 50 — At Eugene, Kevin Chalmers scores 17 points as Jesuit held off a furious Canby rally to win the quarterfinal contest.
Former South Medford player Clint Chapman led Canby with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Class 5A Girls Tournament
u WILLAMETTE 41, WEST ALBANY 30 — At Portland, Danielle Bellando had 13 points and six rebounds to lead No. 5 Willamette of Eugene to a win in the quarterfinal round.
Alyxe Bruns and Ashley Smith added eight points apiece for the Wolverines (21-5), who advance to play top-ranked Jefferson of Portland in a semifinal today.
u JEFFERSON 79, HERMISTON 72 — At Portland, Jefferson used a 16-4 run to pull away from Hermiston in a quarterfinal game.
The game was tied at 59-59 before the top-ranked Democrats (25-1) pulled ahead for good on a basket by Denaya Brazzle. Jefferson scored nine straight to lead 75-63 with 1:30 remaining.
u CHURCHILL 52, WILSONVILLE 36 — At Portland, Churchill battled back from a first-quarter deficit to pull away for a convincing win in a quarterfinal game.
Tana Loftin led Churchill with 16 points.
u CRESCENT VALLEY 55, GLENCOE 33 — At Portland, Crescent Valley used a 16-4 run in the first quarter to take command of a quarterfinal game.
Glencoe shot just 13 of 51 from the field in the loss.
Class 4A Girls Tournament
u JUNCTION CITY 43, SUTHERLIN 30 — At Corvallis, Leah Mancino and Katie Rear had 10 points apiece, and No. 10 Junction City defeated Sutherlin in a quarterfinals contest.
Kayla Rauschert sank a pair of free throws with 32.9 seconds left to give the Tigers (21-5) the lead for good at 41-40.
