Karly Lusk is a complete pitcher, not just a thrower.

The Rogue River senior impressed the other Skyline Conference softball coaches enough with her savvy that she was chosen 2007 player of the year.

"Karly is not going to overpower you with a bunch of speed," said Rogue River's Dennis Artoff, who was tabbed conference coach of the year. "Her forte is moving the ball around and changing speeds. She did a good job of keeping batters off balance."

Lusk posted a 10-3 record with a 0.95 earned run average during the league season. She had 59 strikeouts and 13 walks in 104 innings.

"She's mentally tough," said Artoff, who is stepping down after 11 seasons as Chieftains coach. "Karly Lusk defends the position better than anyone I've had here."

The Chieftains, who finished runner-up to Henley in the league standings, placed five other players on the first team — the most of any school.

Senior outfielder Kaitlin Hoffman is one of the Chieftain first teamers. Hoffman topped the squad in batting average (.439) and RBIs (17).

Seniors Jesse Vegos and Serena Lee, junior Jordan Reyes and sophomore Sabrina Smith were the other Chiefs on the first team.

Lee only made four errors in 68 chances at shortstop. Lee batted .384 and had 10 RBIs. Third baseman Vegos batted .397 with 11 RBIs and had four triples. Reyes, the leadoff hitter, hit .422 and had a team-best 24 runs. Smith played left field and posted a .382 average.

Junior catcher Rebecca Singleton and freshman third baseman Kourtney Scoggins represented Phoenix on the first team.

Singleton, a repeat selection from last year, had a team-high nine RBIs and almost a .400 on-base percentage. Singleton's value was also in the handling of the pitching staff.

"Rebecca was the brain behind a lot of our big wins this season," said Phoenix first-year coach Seanna Doyel. "She called all the pitches in every conference game."

Scoggins led the Pirates in batting (.358) and hits (19).

"From the minute (Scoggins) came on the team, I could have guessed she would be an all-conference athlete," said Doyel. "She's a gamer."

North Valley had three first teamers — seniors Sarah Conard and Casie Hinkle and sophomore Rachel Conard — while Hidden Valley placed juniors Destinee Hernandez and Katie Struffert on the first team
