  • Jackson County's library closure finally caught up with Mellelo Coffee Roasters' operation inside the Medford branch.
Owner Sal Mellelo said the coffee shop, which opened when the library moved from its old Main Street location to Central Avenue three years ago, is suspending operations.
Mellelo's 10-year lease will be frozen through the duration of the closure and then restart once the library opens its doors.
"The county was great to work with and I think we had a great relationship," Mellelo said. "It was one of those things that made sense when we had the opportunity."
Mellelo said the coffee shop had as many as nine employees when the library was operational. But when the library closed in April, business fell off 50 percent and operations were reduced from six to five days, he said. The five remaining employees will be redeployed to Mellelo's operations on Lear Way, Main and Holly Streets, and Sixth and Front Streets.
"We don't have any other shops in the planning right now," Mellelo said. "But we'll be open the day they reopen (the library)."
