GP fends off Thurston in 65-55 win

SPRINGFIELD — Grants Pass went 8-for-8 from the free-throw line in the final period to stave off a late rally and defeat Thurston 65-55 in nonconference girls basketball Monday.

The Cavers (4-1) received 19 points from Kayla Loffer and 14 points apiece from Natasha Torgerson and Amber Franko.

"Kayla played the type of game we've expected from her all season, getting to the basket and not turning the ball over," said Grants Pass coach Robert Lingo. "With her going through four defenders and laying it in, I'm sure that was tough for (Thurston's) coach to watch."

NORTH BEND 28, PHOENIX 25 — At Phoenix, Phoenix freshman Danielle Smith scored a game-high 11 points and hit three from 3-point range, but the Pirates were edged in a contest in which points were hard to come by.

Sophomore forward Qiana Helm had 13 rebounds and eights steals to go with three points for the Pirates.

PROSPECT 45, CHILOQUIN JV 27 — At Chiloquin, Becky Musard poured in 18 points and Jen King added 12 to help Prospect (4-2) overwhelm Chiloquin's junior varsity.

King was also 4-for-5 from the free-throw line, added eight rebounds, two assists and a couple of blocks. Musard added four steals, two assists and drained a couple 3-pointers.

Shepherd had 21 points and 11 rebounds, and Barrett had 17 points and 12 boards. Ryan Robinson was the only other Pirate to score with six points.

Gordon amassed 21 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds for the Cougars (3-3), and Michael Mahoney ripped down 12 rebounds to go with his 12 points.

ROGUE VALLEY ADVENTIST 70, CASCADE CHRISTIAN JV 50 — At Jacksonville, Ryan Cool racked up 14 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds to power host Rogue Valley Adventist past Cascade Christian's junior varsity in a preseason contest.

Tyler Robinson had 15 rebounds and 10 points and Ryan Coggins 16 points and 11 boards for the Red Tail Hawks (4-1).
