Sheldon trips up North Medford again

EUGENE — There is no mystery why North Medford's eight-game winning streak is no more.

The No. 4-ranked Black Tornado shot nine percent in the first half and 20 percent for the game in falling to No. 9 Sheldon 47-34 on Tuesday in Southwest Conference play.

North (16-4, 8-2 SWC) also made just 6 of 16 free throws.

"It's just one of those games, we really struggled from the field," North coach Tim Karrick said. "You are not going to win many games shooting 20 percent from the field. We couldn't throw it in the ocean."

Despite turning the ball over only six times in the first half, North scored just five points and trailed by 21 at the break. The Black Tornado managed to cut the deficit to 10 twice in the second half, but Sheldon made all 10 of its free throws in the final quarter to keep the lead.

"They made the plays," Karrick said of Sheldon. "They were fighting to get a league championship. They played like it. They came out with focus and we didn't match that. I give them a lot of credit. They had to get this win and they did."

The loss is only the second for North in the Southwest Conference, the other also coming against Sheldon, which trails the first-place Black Tornado by just one game.

The Irish also hold the 2-1 tiebreaker over North with five games remaining in the regular season.

Katie Steigleman led Sheldon (14-6, 7-3) with 15 points and Theresa Brown added 12.

North's Karissa Dixon finished with 10 points and Whitney Hodnett scored eight.

"We didn't play with a lot of focus, and we didn't play like the team we've been playing like," Karrick said. "Our strong point is that we don't really rely on one girl to score and different people step up. Tonight no one did."

On Friday, the Tornado travels to South Eugene, another team making a charge for the league title. The Axemen are tied with Sheldon for second in the SWC.

SOUTH MEDFORD 52, ROSEBURG 16 — At Roseburg, Alanna Stevens and Brittney Newcomb each contributed 10 points as South Medford held Roseburg to 16 points in a Southwest Conference win.

Stevens tallied 10 rebounds and four assists while Newcomb also had four assists. Jamee Batten blocked five shots for the Panthers.

The win improves South Medford to 4-6 in Southwest Conference play (11-8 overall), putting it tied for fourth place with Grants Pass. The Panthers face the Cavers on Friday.

SOUTH EUGENE 42. GRANTS PASS 38 — At Grants Pass, Carmen Williams scored 13 points and Sara Whitfielt added 12 points and nine rebounds to lead South Eugene.

South Eugene made critical free throws down the stretch to hold off the Cavers. The Axeman shot 20-for-22 from the foul line overall.

Kayla Goffer scored 10 in the first quarter to help give Grants Pass an early 12-8 lead, but had only four points for the remainder of the game.

SOUTH MEDFORD 89, ROSEBURG 58 — South Medford's Michael Harthun netted a game-high 28 points and E.J. Singler displayed his versatility en route to the SWC victory.

Singler generated 16 points, 15 rebounds, seven assists, three blocks and two steals for the Panthers (16-3, 8-1 SWC), who led 44-29 by halftime.

Harthun also had six assists for South Medford, which received 12 points and seven boards from Mitch Singler and nine points from Zach Haveman.

The Indians were led by Brady Whitman's 10 points.

GRANTS PASS 52, SOUTH EUGENE 49 — At Eugene, Zach Morgan's baseline 3-pointer with 1:20 left in the game broke a 44-all tie and Grants Pass held the lead from there.

The Cavemen (7-12, 3-6 SWC) had three players — Morgan, Dee Wiersma and Jaron West — each score 11 points to help overcome a three-point deficit entering the final period.

Of South Eugene's 13 field goals, 10 were from 3-point range. Alex Coleman drained four for a game-high 12 points for the Axemen (9-10, 3-5).
