Challengers slide by Knights in 12th

MERLIN — Stephen Spence's two-run single in the top of the 12th inning gave Cascade Christian all the insurance it would need as the Class 3A Challengers topped 4A North Valley, 5-2, in a nonleague game on Monday.

Ryan Pech, who also pitched five scoreless innings for the Challengers (1-0), began the 12th with a single and was moved to third on Jeremy Cheney's double.

Spence then drove both runners home, and Jordan Banks capped Cascade Christian's three-run frame with an RBI single.

Earlier, the Challengers broke a scoreless ballgame when Ryder West blasted a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning. The Knights answered in the bottom of the seventh, however, to take the contest into extra innings.

Both teams scored a run in the 10th inning, but Challengers pitcher Colton Cochran finished the game by throwing two near-perfect innings to earn the victory.

Pech, a right-hander, got the start and had four strikeouts. Cheney was 3-for-6 for the Challengers, while Spence and West each went 2-for-4.

MARSHFIELD INVITATIONAL — At Bandon, with wind gusts at 40 miles per hour and rain bending sideways, North Medford's Sunshine Powers was one of the few players to break 50 through nine holes in the 12-team Marshfield Invitational at Bandon Trails Golf Club.

Powers posted a 13-over-par 49 — the sixth-lowest score on the day — leading the North Medford girls golf team to second place.

Because of the playing conditions, the 18-hole tournament was reduced to nine, yet seven teams still weren't able to complete their rounds.

Kelsey Hoffman contributed a 54 for the Black Tornado, while South Medford's Ryann Cuthbertson carded a 60 to lead her team to fifth place.

Medalist Arin Ziegler, a Canby freshman, notched a 7-over-par 43 to help her team take third. Bend won the event with a 208 team score.
