ASHLAND — With a stellar sophomore campaign already in the books, Ashland junior pitcher Bella Pribyl is quickly establishing herself as one of the state's most feared hurlers.
Henley can attest to this after getting a sneak preview of the All-Southern Sky Conference first-team selection in both team's season openers on Tuesday.
Pribyl tossed a one-hitter, striking out 10 Hornets in seven innings of work as the Grizzlies earned a 7-3 victory at Ashland High School.
"She's just throwing really well," said Grizzlies coach Misty Potochnick. "Her change-up was really working and people already know about her fastball. Her confidence just keeps getting better and better. She's developed more pitches so she's a stronger weapon now."
Pribyl's first inning, however, wasn't the smoothest of starts. The junior walked a pair of batters in the top of the first, then yielded a run to Henley.
After Ashland (1-0) took control 2-1 in the bottom of the first, Pribyl settled down, throwing four consecutive scoreless innings.
Like the rest of the Hornet pitchers, Henley's star hurler Autumn Wedan ran into some control issues. She walked three batters in each of the first two frames and the Grizzlies capitalized to take a 3-1 lead.
Ashland's Sammi Gilbert came home on a fielder's choice after stealing second in the Grizzlies two-run first inning. Sarah Silbowitz capped the frame with an easy score on a passed ball.
The Hornets (0-1), who allowed nine base-on-balls in the contest, gave up two in the fourth inning. Gilbert's RBI single inflated Ashland's lead to 4-1, then Jubilee Sharp came home on a fielder's choice to give the Grizzlies a four-run advantage.
"We put the ball in play quite a bit," said Potochnik. "We were able to put pressure on their defense once we had runners on (base). When the ball is in play, good things happen."
Sharp had two of the Grizzlies' four stolen bases, while Gilbert, a senior second baseman, was 2 for 2 with three runs and two RBIs.
Henley's hit was an RBI triple by Jessi Driessen.
