Ashland opens season with impressive win

ASHLAND — Ashland looked in midseason form in its baseball opener Tuesday.

The Grizzlies prevailed with a 1-0 victory in 12-innings against perennial Class 4A power Henley at North Mountain Park.

Four Ashland pitchers allowed the Hornets just three hits and combined for 12 strikeouts. Neither team committed an error.

"Henley has a great program," Ashland coach Don Senestraro said. "It was 12 innings of pressure baseball. It was nice to see the kids come out and handle that. It showed we're ready to compete."

The Grizzlies pushed across the winning run against fourth Hornet pitcher John Cullen, who failed to retire a batter.

Lewis Sebrell opened the winning rally with a single and Owen Baldrica followed with a double. After Sam Gaviglio was walked intentionally, Luke Jannusch delivered an RBI single to end the game.

Garrett Tygerson pitched the final two innings to get the win for Ashland. Grizzly starter Sam Gaviglio went four innings, Tyler Killeen tossed two innings followed by a four-inning stint by Charlie Sebrell.

"Our pitching staff picked up from where we left off this summer," said Senestraro, whose team won the American Legion A state championship. "We have four guys that can really bring it."

Ashland got two hits each from Lewis Sebrell, Baldrica, Jannusch and Ian Reynolds.

"I liked that we played 12 innings of errorless baseball," said Senestraro. "Our hitting will warm up as the weather warms up. We have a good hitting team."

ROGUE RIVER 6, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 5 (8 INNINGS) — At Rogue River, Joe Chirstie hit a single that drove in Chris Burman for the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning of Rogue River's nonconference opener.

Eli Haberman hit a home run in the bottom of the seventh with two outs to tie it up at five and force the game into extra innings. Haberman also had eight strikeouts.

Ty Darr hit a two-run double in the fourth that kept the Chieftains in the game with a four-all tie.

Chris Burman and Dillon Gardner each had two hits for Rogue River (1-0).

For Cascade Christian, Brandon Hauser hit a double in the fourth to give the Challengers (1-1) their first lead.

HIDDEN VALLEY 10, EAGLE POINT 5 — At Murphy, Seth Aamatti had five RBIs on two hits, including a double, to help Hidden Valley get a nonconference win over Eagle Point.

Ryan Hayden also had two hits for the Mustangs (1-0) and threw six strikeouts.

Ben Charleton had two hits for the Eagles (0-1), including a double. Darren Adams also had two hits.

ILLINOIS VALLEY 5, GLIDE 3 — At Glide, Illinois Valley broke open a tie game in the fourth inning by scoring four runs to get the win.

Joe Anderson pitched a complete game for Illinios Valley and surrendered only three runs on six hits.

Josh Huskey and Josh Rose each went 2 for 3 on the day for Glide.

UMPQUA VALLEY CHRISTIAN 14, ST. MARY'S 4 — St. Mary's committed four errors in the first inning leading to seven Umpqua Valley Christian runs and St. Mary's dropped its season opener at home in five innings.

The Crusaders' Austin Schrader pitched two innings and was tagged with the loss, though he pitched effectively, his coach said.

Brad Herrmann led St. Mary's with a 2 for 2 effort including two stolen bases, two runs scored and one RBI.

Ryan Graf recorded the win for UVC.
