Jones, Earle pitch North to opening win

EUGENE — The North Medford baseball team got off on the right foot Wednesday with a 3-1 victory over North Eugene in a season-opening game.

The Black Tornado turned to its pitching, with starter Andrew Jones and reliever Zach Earle out-dueling North Eugene ace Tim Keller.

Jones struck out five in five innings of work, while Earle fanned two in relief. The two gave up two hits combined.

North Medford pulled away from a 1-all tie with a pair of runs in the sixth.

Jordan Bostwick singled home Hayden Wolfe with one out in the inning for a 2-1 lead. Kody Stevens followed with another RBI single to plate Bostwick.

The Black Tornado (1-0) hosts Mountain View on Saturday at 1 p.m.

SOUTH MEDFORD 6, ASHLAND 2 — South Medford opened its season with by sweeping the doubles competition from Ashland in a nonconference match at Fichtner-Mainwaring.

Track

CRUSADER RELAY — The St. Mary's girls track team corralled five victories on its way to second place in the eight-team Crusader Relay at St. Mary's High School.

Four of the Crusader wins came in relay events. They won the 4x100 (53.5), 4x200 (2:03.0), 4x400 (4:21.8) and 4x800 (10:56.9).

Rebecca Tribblehorn was the leading leg of all four teams. Mackenzie Krieser and Morgan Martin played a part in three of the victories, while Hanna Heycke, Liz Barnum, Nikki Steinsiek and Emily Reeder all played roles in St. Mary's success.

Junior Anna McCreedy cleared 6-6 in the pole vault to account for the Crusader girls' only individual triumph.

For Crusader boys, Chase Farthing nearly set a lifetime mark in the pole vault. The senior soared 12-6 to earn first place.
