RENO, Nevada — The Crater softball team opened its season with two wins and a loss during round robin play at the Reed Easter Tournament on Friday.
The Comets dropped a 5-3 decision to Reed High School, of Nevada, in the opener, then took down Elko (Nevada) 8-1 and Oaks (California) 8-3.
Ashleigh Larson, Amanda Bates and Tara Ruvalcaba each had two hits in the opener against Reed.
In Game 2 against Elko, Larson went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, Emily Morrill was 2-for-3 and pitcher Brittney Reeves struck out nine in the four-inning game, which was cut short due to a time limit.
Larson, Kayla Hopkinson and Breyanna Reed each had two hits in the third game, with Reed striking out 12 and walking just one in six innings of work on the mound.
Crater, the defending Class 5A state champions, opens bracket play this morning at 11.

ASHLAND WINS TWO — At Yreka, Calif., Ashland cruised to a 14-0 victory over Mount Shasta and a 16-0 triumph over Central Valley at the Yreka Tournament.
Bella Pribyl recorded both wins to improve to 3-0. She struck out 14 against Mount Shasta and tossed two innings in the rout of Central Valley.
Amanda Good went 2-for-4 with three RBIs against Mount Shasta, while Kylie Cantrell added two hits and two RBIs and Sara Silbowitz contributed two hits and three runs.
Against Central Valley, Sammi Gilbert had three hits and two RBIs, Carley Santee added two hits and Silbowitz picked up a pair of hits and three RBIs.
