Crater opens season with baseball split

FRESNO, Calif. — Crater rebounded from a 9-0 loss to Bullard in its season-opening baseball game to top San Joaquin Memorial 3-2 in the Easter Baseball Classic.

The Comets, the defending Class 5A Oregon champions, got strong pitching from Bruce Sanford and Craig Kathol to hold off a late surge by San Joaquin of Fresno.

With Crater clinging to a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, San Joaquin pushed across one run. Kathol, on in relief, responded with two strikeouts to earn the save.

Sanford started and got the win, yielding six hits and one run to go with eight strikeouts in six innings.

Crater got back-to-back doubles in the third inning from Zach Boskovich and Steven Ruvalcaba to tie the score at 1-1. Bryce Peila added a solo home run in the fifth inning, and Hayden Bighouse made it 3-1 with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Boskovich and Ruvalcaba each had a pair of hits.

In Crater's first game, Bullard received a four-hit shutout from Julio Ponce. Peila had two of the Comets' four hits.
