FRESNO, Calif. — Bryce Peila belted a home run for the second straight day and Craig Kathol pitched a four-hitter to lead Crater to an 11-1, five-inning win over Roosevelt (Calif.) Tuesday in the 39th annual Fresno Easter Classic.
Peila hit a solo home run in the first inning to help the Comets (2-1) take a 2-1 lead, and Crater essentially put the game away with four runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run double by Steven Ruvalcaba.
The Comets finished with 13 hits despite not having to come to the plate in the fifth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule.
"We took care of business," said Crater coach Jay Campbell. "Anytime you bang out 13 hits, that's a good sign."
Peila was 2-for-4 with two runs and Ruvalcaba 2-for-2, while teammate Kos Ray chipped in by going 2-for-3 with two runs.
Kathol was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, and the junior right-hander also had three strikeouts in keeping Roosevelt at bay.
"We've played three games now down here and all the pitchers have done pretty well for this early," said Campbell.
Crater continues the 30-team tournament with a game at 10 a.m. today against California's Edison High.
