Schmidt returns, fuels North to first win

SPRINGFIELD — North Medford junior ace Taylor Schmidt returned from a preseason knee injury and pitched a complete game, striking out seven and walking none in a 5-1 victory over Thurston in a nonconference softball game on Thursday— the Black Tornado's first win of the season.

Schmidt was also 3-for-3 from the plate and drove in three runs.

"It was a solid effort today," North coach Mike Mayben said. "Getting Taylor back was a boost."

Schmidt never faced more than four hitters in any inning and allowed just three hits. Her only earned run came on a first-inning solo home run from Thurston's Chloe Alverson.

But Schmidt helped North recapture the lead by driving in two in the third inning.

The Tornado's Brittany Griffor and Amanda Wolfe added doubles against Thurston's Amanda Miller, who surrendered eight hits in the game.

Thurston committed three errors, while North (1-3) played error-free despite the slick field conditions.

"They executed everything they needed to," Mayben said of his team. "They weathered the elements and worked hard today."

ASHLAND 9, PHOENIX 0 — At Talent, pitchers Bella Pribyl and Hayley Ross combined to pitch a one-hit shutout for Ashland (6-0).

Pribyl, a junior, worked four strong innings, striking out 11 and walking only two to run her record to 6-0.

Senior pinch hitter Heidi Siebenlist hit a two-out bases-loaded double to deep center field in the fourth, which scored three runs to give Ashland a commanding lead.

Junior Amanda Good went 2-for-3 and scored three runs for the Grizzlies, while junior Jubilee Sharpe went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

HIDDEN VALLEY 4, DEL NORTE 3 — At Crescent City, Calif., Hidden Valley managed to overcome an early deficit to pick up the nonconference win against Del Norte High.

Hidden Valley pitcher Destinee Hernandez walked two and surrendered a double and triple in the first inning as Del Norte took a 3-1 lead.

But Hernandez, a senior, settled down and did not allow a hit the rest of the way. She finished with 11 strikeouts.

Hidden Valley went in front with three runs in the second inning when Michelle Aslakson tripled and scored on an illegal pitch and Kendra Peckham drove in two more on a triple.

Peckham finished 2-for-2.

EAGLE POINT 5, GRANTS PASS 4 — At Eagle Point, Frank Charlton pitched four solid innings and added an RBI to lead Eagle Point to the win.

Charlton went 3-for-3 and struck out four batters for the Eagles (1-2), while brother Ben Charlton went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Zach Morgan went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Grants Pass, which managed only two hits in the game.

ST. MARY'S 12, GLENDALE 1 — At Glendale, Paul Hume quieted Glendale's offense through five innings on the mound and Austin Schrader went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs to lead St. Mary's to the nonleague win.

Hume struck out nine and allowed only one hit with three walks for the Crusaders (1-1). His lone run allowed was unearned. Mike Brimble pitched two hitless innings in relief.
