OSU baseball players arrested after target practice

CORVALLIS — Two Oregon State baseball players, including the Most Outstanding Player of last year's College World Series, were among three men arrested on accusations they fired bullets that struck a house and a car, a newspaper reported.

Jorge Reyes, 20 and John Wallace, 21, were cited for unlawful use of a weapon and criminal mischief. Former player Anton Maxwell was arrested on the same charges, the Gazette-Times reported Thursday.

Corvallis Police spokesman Dave Henslee said the men were seen using a rifle to shoot at soda cans in the backyard of Maxwell's house early Tuesday, and some of the bullets went through a fence.

Brian Bodtker, one of seven students who lives in the house on the other side of the fence, said two of the bullets lodged in an outside wall but one went through his bedroom window. Three more bullets hit a car parked in front of the same window.

"One shot went through my bedroom window, ricocheted off the wall and landed on my bed," Bodtker told the Gazette-Times.

Police contacted a neighbor who said she saw three men firing the rifle around 1:30 a.m.

The suspects were cited and released from custody after cooperating with police, Henslee said. District Attorney John Haroldson of Benton County said he will review the case before filing formal charges.

Reyes is a starting pitcher for the two-time defending national champions. He posted two wins in last year's College World Series and was named Most Outstanding Player.

The sophomore has pitched poorly this season, compiling an 11.15 ERA in four starts.

Wallace, a junior outfielder, has started eight of Oregon State's 13 games this season. He has a .410 on-base percentage and .600 slugging percentage in 35 at-bats.

Maxwell pitched on both of Oregon State's championship teams. The Texas Rangers selected him in the 31st round of last year's draft, but released him in December.
