Panthers go 1-1 at Arizona tourney

ANTHEM, Ariz. — South Medford had mixed results Wednesday at the Coach Bob National Invitational baseball tournament.

The Panthers dropped an 11-1 decision in six innings to Piedra Vista of New Mexico, then bounced back to down Boulder Creek (Ariz.) in the afternoon game, 10-4.

Griffin Boyd went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and hit his second home run of the season — a two-run shot — in the victory over Boulder Creek.

Senior right-hander Mark Smith went the distance on the mound for South, giving up eight hits and three earned runs while striking out six and walking one.

In the morning contest, Piedra Vista scored four runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead for good.

Brennan Shay and Jake McCasland each had a home run and three RBIs to lead Piedra Vista's 15-hit attack.

The Panthers (4-2), who are 2-2 at the tournament, continue play this morning at 9 with a game against Centaurus, Colo. South then plays Wheatridge (Colo.) at 4 p.m.

RALSTON VALLEY 8, ASHLAND 4 — At Anthem, Ariz., Ralston Valley (Colo.) took control with a four-run fifth inning to hand Ashland its first loss of the season at the Coach Bob National Invitational.

The Grizzlies' Owen Baldrica opened the scoring with a solo home run in the first and Nicholas Hall had a two-run double in the fourth, part of a three-run inning for Ashland (7-1). The Grizzlies led 4-2 heading into the fifth.

But three walks and a hit batsmen by Ashland jump-started Ralston Valley's comeback. The Mustangs tacked on four in the fifth and two more in the sixth for the win.

Softball

CENTRAL OREGON TOURNAMENT — At Bend, Ashland earned a pair of shutout victories, defeating Crescent Valley 10-0 and host Mountain View 7-0.

Pitcher Bella Pribyl ran her record to 10-0. She pitched three innings against Crescent Valley and went the distance for a one-hitter against Mountain View.

Ashland pounded out 12 hits against Crescent Valley in a five-inning contest. Amanda Good was 2-for-2 including a three-run home run in the first inning. Sammi Gilbert and Hayley Ross were both 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Kylie Cantrell hit a two-run home run in the third.

Carley Santee and Drew Van Vleck were both 2-for-3 against Mountain View. Ross had one hit but it was a fifth-inning three-run home run. Good added two RBIs in the contest.
