GLIDE — From the mound and the plate, Cascade Christian pitcher Jeremy Cheney was a formidable opponent for Glide's first-team all-state left-hander Jeff Jackson in a Sunset League contest on Monday.
But a strange series of events led to a three-run second inning for Glide and the Wildcats used that momentum to claim a 7-3 victory over the Challengers.
After walking a batter and hitting another, Cheney missed first base on a pickoff attempt and that allowed one run to score for Glide. Wildcats catcher Shaun Enserink capped the inning with a two-run double, giving Glide a 3-2 advantage.
"It was a big hit and a big moment," said Challengers coach Paul Sha of the go-ahead double. "It was just one of those weird innings."
Cheney had three strikeouts from the mound in four innings and was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. The senior was 3-for-3 with an RBI double in the top of the third and RBI triple in the fifth.
Daniel Kinney's double pushed across a run in the first inning, putting Cascade Christian (5-6, 1-1 Sunset) on the board first.
Jackson, who went 13-2 last season for the Wildcats, had ACL surgery in December. He allowed seven hits and three runs over seven innings on Monday.
"We got to him, we just left too many men on base in key situations," said Sha.

GLIDE 3, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 2 — At Glide, sophomore pitcher Leah Weakley scattered five hits and did not surrender a run, but errors doomed Cascade Christian in Sunset League action.
An errant throw in the third inning cost the Challengers (4-5, 1-1 Sunset) two runs and another miscue in the fourth helped Glide jump out to a 3-0 lead.
Following back-to-back singles from Brandi Johnson and Nikki Jones, Amanda Kinney nearly tied the game in the top of the sixth with a two-run double — a line-drive that rattled off the top of the fence.
Veronica Martinez also had a hit for the Challengers.

SOUTHERN SKY CONFERENCE — Medalist Robyn Enloe carded a 17-over-par 87 for the Crater girls golf team, lifting the Comets to a season-opening Southern Sky Conference meet victory at Stewart Meadows Golf Course.
Crater topped runner-up Ashland, 449-508. Eagle Point was a player short of completing a four-player team score and Klamath Union didn't make the trip.
Enloe, a senior, was the only player to break 100 on the afternoon. Katie DeWitt and Maile Guthrie each went for 118s for the Comets.
The Grizzlies were led by Emily Warnke-Crary's 107.
