TALENT — Phoenix remained undefeated, but barely, in nonconference baseball against Ashland Tuesday.
The Pirates had to survive a six-run seventh inning by the Grizzlies to hold on for an 8-7 victory at Hagler-James Park.
Phoenix (5-0) built an 8-1 lead through five innings behind starting pitcher Jordan Lewis.
"Jordan pitched really well," said Phoenix coach Joe Hagler. "He mixed up his pitches and hit his spots. It was nice to see him come out early and have command of his pitches.
Lewis struck out 12, walked one and allowed five hits in five innings. Ashland's lone run off Lewis was unearned.
The Grizzlies jumped on relievers Jordan Decker and Ryan Robinson for five hits and six runs in the seventh. Ashland collected all three of its extra-base hits in the stanza. Robinson retired Max Gordon, who opened the rally with a single, on a fly ball to center to end the game with Garrett Tygerson on third.
"We got a little complacent," said Hagler. "We were pretty sloppy defensively. It was costly at times for us."
Jake Murphy went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs to pace the Pirates' 12-hit attack. Jordan Lewis and Neil Emerson each had two hits and two RBIs, while Andrew George contributed two hits and scored twice.
Ashland had four players — Gordon, Owen Baldrica, Tyler Killeen and Luke Jannush — with two hits apiece.
