Hume, Brimble help Crusaders blank Chiloquin

St. Mary's aces Paul Hume and Mike Brimble both posted shutouts and only allowed four hits combined, guiding St. Mary's past Chiloquin in two five-inning games — 16-0 and 10-0 — to open Southern Cascade League play at St. Mary's High School on Saturday.

"As freshman and sophomores, they came out and got beat up in that first season," said Crusaders coach Lonny Flora of Hume and Brimble, who were a sophomore and freshman when Flora started the program in 2006. "Now they understand that level we need to play at now that they're older."

Hume, now a senior, and one of the Crusaders' three left-handed pitchers, posted a one-hitter in five innings to go with 12 strikeouts in the opener.

"Paul's coming into mid-season form," said Flora. "His curveball, he was really locating it. You could tell he had a lot of confidence."

Hume also helped his own cause, going 2-for-3, scoring four times and stealing two bases.

Freshman Justin Southwick provided more support for Hume, driving in three runs and Austin Schrader went 2-for-2, scored three times and plated a pair.

Schrader also swiped three of the Crusaders' seven stolen bases. With just one extra-base hit, St. Mary's (5-1, 2-0 SCL) relied on small-ball strategy, getting runners into scoring position anyway it could.

In Game 2, Brimble picked up right where Hume left off.

The junior right-hander scattered three hits, fanned five and did not surrender a run in five innings of work. He also scored three runs in the game and added a pair of doubles.
