Police release name of man found dead near Lithia Park in February

Police have identified the burned body found above Lithia Park in February as Bennett Tanner, a long-time homeless resident of Ashland.

The body was discovered at campsite near the granite pit area above the park by a passer-by Feb. 12. The death appeared to be caused by a fire that got out of control, according to autopsy results. Medical examiners with the Jackson County Sheriff's Office are still working on toxicology reports to determine the cause and time of death. Authorities say the report revealed no signs of foul play.

Friends of Tanner held memorial services in honor of the man in early March, after they learned that sock puppets were found at the scene. Tanner had been missing for some time and was known for his sock puppet shows and comedy routines, friends said.

Another memorial is set from noon to 3 p.m. April 14 at the Ashland library's Gresham Room, with a short ceremony to follow in Lithia Park.
