MERLIN — North Valley's back-up plan is working out just fine.
After their top two projected pitchers were injured before the season started, the Knights had to turn to Rachel Conard, a catcher, and Shawlena Haga, a first baseman.
On Tuesday, the two combined to help North Valley defeat Rogue River 6-3 in Skyline Conference play.
Conard earned the win, her fourth of the season, by pitching 32/3 innings, striking out nine and walking just one. She struck out the side when Haga ran into trouble in the fourth and was also 2-for-3 at the plate, including a base-clearing triple in the fourth inning. She finished with four RBIs.
Chelsey Million was 2-for-3 and scored a run for North Valley (9-4, 4-0 Skyline).
Angie Caschera was 2-for-4 for Rogue River (2-7, 1-3 Skyline). The Chieftains took a 1-0 lead in the first inning but were done in by a four-run fourth inning.
