Irish sweep Panthers in comeback

South Medford held leads into the sixth inning of both games of Saturday's Southwest Conference softball doubleheader with Sheldon at Fagone Field.

But the veteran Irish turned in big rallies in each contest to sweep the twin bill, 4-2 in the opener and 3-1 in the nightcap.

Eighth-ranked Sheldon (12-4, 5-1 SWC), which returned six senior starters, put together a three-run sixth inning in Game 1 to erase a 2-1 deficit. In Game 2, the Irish again tacked on three runs to wipe out South Medford's 1-0 advantage.

"It was two good ballgames," said Panthers coach Dan Marshall. "They got the key hits when they needed them and we didn't."

Seniors Katie Steigleman and Taylor Pangilinan delivered the big blows for Sheldon in the first game.

With two outs in the sixth, Jessica Patterson and Teea Rogers put together back-to-back singles, and Steigleman followed with a two-run double. Pangilinan capped the inning with a base hit to score Steigleman.

Steigleman finished the contest with two hits, two RBIs and two runs, while Pangilinan had two RBIs.

Kinzie Towry was 2-for-4 for South Medford, and Shyanne Jones went 2-for-2.

In the second game, Pangilinan tripled home two runs, and Patterson added an RBI hit to key Sheldon's sixth-inning comeback.

Jones scored the Panthers' lone run when she tripled and came home on Josie Walker's RBI single.

Towry again had two hits to pace South Medford (7-8, 2-4 SWC).

Southern Sky Conference

ASHLAND 6-1, CRATER 0-2 — At Central Point, Bella Pribyl tossed a two-hitter for Ashland in the opener but Crater salvaged a split to remain tied for first place in the Southern Sky with the Grizzlies.

In Game 1, Sarah Silbowitz paced the Grizzlies (11-4, 4-2 SSC), going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Hayley Ross, Amanda Good and Jubilee Sharpe added two hits each for Ashland.

Crater junior pitcher Brittany Reeves allowed only three hits to pick up the win in the nightcap.

The Comets (11-4, 4-2) were sparked by Emily Morrill, who pounded two doubles and drove in both runs.

EAGLE POINT 2-1, MAZAMA 1-5 — At Eagle Point, Karlie Stephens limited Mazama to four hits in the opener, but the Vikings salvaged the split behind the pitching of Ali Edwards.

The Eagles scored twice off Edwards in the first inning of Game 1, and Stephens made the lead hold up. Stephens struck out nine and didn't walk a batter to run her record to 9-2. Stephens has registered 96 strikeouts and only issued six walks on the season.

The Eagles' runs came on a leadoff double by Katie Jolliffe, followed by RBI doubles from McKenzie Re and Ashley Josephson

Josephson went 3-for-3 and Jamie Paxton added two hits for the Eagles (11-5, 3-3 SSC).

Edwards scattered six hits in the nightcap.

EP's run came when Re opened the sixth with a single, Josephson singled and Re scored from third on a grounder by Stephens.

Re had three hits.

PHOENIX 8-11, ROGUE RIVER 5-0 — At Phoenix, Kirstin Stroud-Vega pitched a two-hitter in the five-inning nightcap to complete the sweep for Phoenix.

Stroud-Vega struck out six and walked two. She also finished off the first-game victory.

Mackenzie Welburn and Rebecca Singleton each had three hits for the Pirates (7-8, 3-3 Skyline), and Stroud-Vega and Miranda Barajas had two hits.

In the opener, the Pirates' Kirstie Heath and Nicole Knudson were each 2-for-4.

HIDDEN VALLEY 10-10, NORTH VALLEY 0-0 — At Murphy, Hidden Valley's pitching allowed just four hits combined while nine errors doomed North Valley in a Skyline twin bill.

Mustangs pitcher Angie Dangelo allowed three hits — all singles from Rachel Conard — to go with nine strikeouts in the five-inning opener.

Katie Struffert's two-out, three-run double in the second frame gave the Mustangs a 5-0 advantage. Hidden Valley scored all of its runs with two outs, eight of which were unearned.

Kendra Morgan went 3-for-4 and scored twice for the Mustangs.

Left-hander Destinee Hernandez threw a one-hitter in the five-inning nightcap.

Nicole Harris had a double and a triple for Hidden Valley, while Jeana Rinehart had the lone hit for North Valley (9-6, 4-2 Skyline).

LAKEVIEW 20-7, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 17-8 — Brandi Johnson's grounder scored Brittany Biondi with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 2 as Cascade Christian managed a split in Sunset League play.

Nikki Jones belted a three-run double for the lone hit by the Challengers (9-9, 5-3 Sunset).

In the opener, Cascade Christian had 16 hits, including a triple by Emily Teterud, two doubles by Johnson and one double each by Biondi and Jones.
