Roseburg keeps North winless in SWC

ROSEBURG — North Medford coach Mike Mayben felt his team would have to be near perfect to get past Roseburg on Wednesday in a Southwest Conference softball twin bill.

The Black Tornado was not and the Indians took advantage.

Mikayla Endicott, the reigning state pitcher of the year, struck out 31 batters over two games and Roseburg scored four unearned runs in the nightcap to sweep North, 3-1 in Game 1 and 5-0 in Game 2.

The losses dropped North Medford to 4-9 overall and 0-6 in the Southwest Conference.

Taylor Schmidt gave up just five hits in the nightcap but four Tornado errors led to four runs.

"They sure don't need any help and we gave them some," Mayben said. "I figured we'd have to play our best and Roseburg would have to be a little off for us to come up here and get a win. That didn't happen."

Endicott was particularly tough, striking out 18 batters in Game 1 and yielding only seven hits over the two contests.

"What hasn't been said about her?" Mayben said. "She's pretty phenomenal. She just overpowers you then throws a riseball that is almost impossible to lay off."

North Medford took a 1-0 lead in the opener when Bri Williams led off the fourth inning with a double and came home on a Cassie Choi RBI single.

Roseburg tied the game in the bottom of the inning, then went ahead for good in the fifth on a two-run home run by Tori Walker.

Schmidt went 2-for-3 to lead North in Game 1, while Whitney Harris and Kendra George each had two hits for the Indians (11-3-1, 6-0 SWC).

In the second game, Roseburg scored three unearned runs in the second to take command with a 4-0 lead.

ROGUE RIVER 23, ILLINIOS VALLEY 2 — At Rogue River, Ashley Phillips hit for the cycle and added a sacrifice fly to lead Rogue River to the four-inning victory.

Sarah Stinchcomb allowed two runs and no hits while registering four strikeouts for Rogue River (3-9, 2-5 Skyline), which had 12 runs in the first inning.

Rogue River finished with seven extra base hits and had four players with multiple hits.

SWC Baseball

GRANTS PASS 12, SOUTH MEDFORD 0 — At Grants Pass, Zach Morgan struck out six with one walk and only two hits allowed for Grants Pass in the six-inning Southwest Conference victory.

A.J. Palazzolo slapped a second-inning double and John Adamson added a third-inning single for South Medford (9-9, 1-6 SWC).

Eric Davidson gave Grants Pass an early lead with a three-run home run in the second inning, and Buddy Saxon closed the game in walk-off fashion with a three-run home run in the sixth.

Ryan Miller was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and David Chaldu was 2-for-2 with two runs for the Cavemen (9-6, 3-4), while Cody Sells was 2-for-3 with two runs and Justin Hood was 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.

ROSEBURG 3, SHELDON 0 — At Eugene, Jordan Guthrie had all three of Roseburg's hits and drove in all of its runs in support of Brandon Jackson's pitching performance in the Southwest Conference win.

Guthrie's two-run home run in the top of the fourth inning put the Indians (10-4, 5-2 SWC) on the board.

Jackson, a sophomore right-hander, allowed just five hits by Sheldon (10-8, 4-3) and struck out five in seven innings.

Skyline Baseball

ROGUE RIVER 3, ILLINOIS VALLEY 1 — At Rogue River, Rogue River's Dillon Gardner provided offense and clutch pitching down the stretch in the Skyline Conference contest.

With runners on the corners in the top of the second, Rogue River freshman Christian Reyes got caught in a rundown, inducing a throw to second base. With Reyes dancing between first and second, Gardner was able to steal home plate and tack on the Chieftains' first run.

Gardner later gave the Chieftains a 3-1 lead with an RBI single in the top of the fourth. He went 2-for-3 and pitched the final two innings to earn the save.

Starting pitcher Chris Burman struck out three in five innings for Rogue River (9-6, 2-5 Skyline).

Alex Bergman went 2-for-4 and drove in the Cougars' lone run.

HENLEY 14, NORTH VALLEY 4 — At Klamath Falls, Henley rolled up eight runs in the third inning and North Valley committed six errors overall in the six-inning contest.

The Knights (5-13, 2-5 Skyline) allowed five hits, two walks and made three errors in a third inning that saw the Hornets bat around. North Valley surrendered eight walks and hit a batter in the contest.

David Rosser's sacrifice fly clinched the game for Henley in the sixth because of the 10-run mercy rule.

North Valley's Keith Suits led off the game with a home run, his second of the season, and Eric Ogden kick-started the fifth with another round-tripper.

John Guzman was 2-for-3 for the Knights, while Henley's Ethan Pace went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Kyle Hawkins was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Nonconference Baseball

PHOENIX 8, KLAMATH UNION 2 — At Klamath Falls, Neil Emerson pitched four innings of shutout ball to earn his seventh victory and vault second-ranked Phoenix to a nonconference win at Kiger Stadium.

Emerson, who has given up just four runs over 38 innings, allowed three hits, a walk and fanned four in five innings. He was nearly perfect until the fifth inning when he yielded both of the Pelicans' runs.

Emerson increased the Pirates' lead to 4-0 with a two-run single in the third.

Mike Shepherd had a double and added an RBI triple in the top of the fifth, while Kory Locken and Ryan Robinson each collected a pair of hits and scored twice.

Emerson and Jake Murphy each drove in two runs and had two hits for the Pirates (14-2), who host top-ranked Hidden Valley today at 4:30 p.m.
