  • Have You Heard: Listening

  • Listen up, you know it's important! Being a good listener is something we do for each other and it doesn't cost a thing. That's what Have You Heard? learned this month when we asked women, "How important is listening in your life? Do you use a technique to help you listen deeply? Is being a good listener hard or easy?"

I'm a pretty good listener. You have to be patient and let the person finish what they have to say. You have to think about what they said before you respond, remembering it's from their perspective.

Listening comes easy for me because it's part of my job. I look the person in the eye and repeat what they say to me, to show I've really heard what they told me. It's a practiced art, easy for some, difficult for others. But I believe everyone appreciates when someone truly listens.

Listening is so important. I try to be good at it, but like everyone else I could still improve. Sometimes you hear the words, but you really don't get the meaning until you really listen deeply. I try to pay attention and not let anything distract me while others talk.

The most important aspect of listening is to have eye contact and to listen with your heart. I really do embrace whatever feeling comes in to me and consider what the other person is feeling. We all know each other's feelings—we've all had them.

I find it's harder for me to listen now, as a mom with so many voices calling me. It's easier to talk to my husband when the kids are in bed. In business calls, I mentally repeat the other person's name and at the end of the conversation I use it to say goodbye. It seems to work.

Sometimes listening is easy and other times hard, but it's always important for the person you are listening to. You learn when you listen. I look at the person, at their eyes or their lips. That minimizes other distractions.

In a seminar or class my listening depends on the subject and the presenter. I go to a lot of meetings. Sometimes the speaker is dry and uses a monotone. It's really hard to listen then. I like a little bit of fun and a little bit of hilarity and humor. And it depends on how well informed they are. A speaker should help me keep my interest. If it's boring, I squirm.

Listening is part of my job because I interview people on the phone. It's critical that I pick up on the nuances and the hesitations, because it helps me evaluate their potential for the job that I'm hiring for.
