Wilsonville overpowers Crater

WILSONVILLE — Crater couldn't contain an effective ground attack from perennial football power Wilsonville, and the Comets' offense was without two key players.

Those two factors contributed to a 27-13 Comet loss to the Wildcats in the season opener Friday.

Crater senior quarterback Josh Lokeno didn't suit up because of a one-game suspension and Comet leading rusher D.J. Pree was knocked out with a knee injury on the second play of the game. Pree's status won't be known until he's examined this week.

Crater tied the game 7-all on backup quarterback Christian Massey's 3-yard run in the first quarter. But the Wildcats went into halftime with a 21-7 lead on a Jake Jones 37-yard TD pass to Michael Mackelvie and a 2-yard scoring run by Jones in the second quarter.

"We weren't playing very well," said Crater coach John Beck about his team's first-half performance. "We'd make a big play, then shoot ourselves in the foot."

With Wilsonville leading 27-7, Crater struck on a 74-yard, fourth-quarter scoring pass from Massey to Garell Staten. Then the Comets thought they had recovered an onside kick, but the referees ruled a Crater player touched the ball before going 10 yards and the Wildcats retained possession.

K.J. Larson gained 135 yards and scored one touchdown to lead the Wilsonville ground attack that totaled 287 yards.

"Wilsonville just lined up and controlled the ball," said Beck. "They're big and physical."

Crater had just 31 yards rushing and 86 passing.

ASHLAND 28, HENLEY 21 — At Klamath Falls, Talon Haggard kept Ashland in the game early and Lewis Sebrell came through in the clutch as the Grizzlies avoided a season-opening upset.

Haggard had touchdown runs of 2, 8 and 1 yards to offset a run of 21 straight points by Henley spanning part of the first and second quarters.

The Grizzlies still trailed 21-20 in the fourth quarter but gained momentum with a fumble recovery in their own territory with just under six minutes to play. Lewis Sebrell proved to be the workhorse on the ensuing drive, capping the comeback with a 5-yard dash to the end zone with 2:35 to play.

Haggard then teamed up with Sebrell for a two-point conversion and the Grizzlies denied the Hornets from that point on.

Sebrell carried the ball 21 times for 95 yards, while Haggard rushed for 63 yards on 12 carries and completed 12 of 22 passes for 140 yards.

EAGLE POINT 55, MADRAS 0 — At Eagle Point, Eagle Point pinned Madras to negative total yardage and accumulated 340 yards on the ground in a convincing victory.

Garrett Davis and Anthony Jose each scored three touchdowns for the Eagles.

Jose punched in a pair of 1-yard scores on the ground then ripped off a 51-yard TD run at the latter part of the third quarter. He compiled 158 yards on 16 carries.

Davis, a senior wide receiver, found pay dirt twice on runs and hauled in a 35-yard pass from quarterback Austin Marlia. Davis had four receptions for 78 yards to go with 35 yards rushing on three carries.

Marlia backed the ground attack with 117 yards on 7-for-11 passing.

MAZAMA 19, SUMMIT 13 — At Klamath Falls, Danny Saltenberger rushed for 121 and scored three touchdowns to lead Mazama.

GRANTS PASS 43, HOOD RIVER 7 — At Grants Pass, senior tailback Criss Bowen carried 14 times for 162 yards and John Tardieu powered his way to a pair of touchdown runs as Grants Pass made head coach John Musser a winner in his debut at Mel Ingram Stadium.

Quarterback Jordy Romick connected with Ronnie Fields for a 22-yard score and Romick capped a 22-0, first-quarter surge with a 36-yard scoring run.

Grants Pass finished with 323 yards rushing on 39 carries and limited Hood River to 138 yards of total offense.
