Comets cruise by Cavemen

Crater soccer player Toby MacGuire goes high for a header during the Comets’ 2-1 nonconference victory against Grants Pass on Tuesday at Dutch Meyer Field.Jerry Clarkson

CENTRAL POINT — Travis Robbins played a part in both Crater goals as the Comet boys scored a 2-1 triumph over visiting Grants Pass in nonconference soccer Tuesday.

Robbins tallied the first goal of the season opener in the 30th minute off a throw-in from Matt Crowl deep in Caveman territory, then set up another goal five minutes later with a crossing pass that was gathered up in the box and deposited in goal by Elias Rangel.

Crater, which carries 14 on the varsity roster but was down to 12 due to disciplinary matters, managed to keep GP at bay until an own goal in the 71st minute denied a shutout for goalkeeper Ben Pertzer.

"The worst thing was it was off a backwards header and it looped in," said Crater coach Chris Gallegos.

Still, Gallegos was pleased with the effort on Tuesday.

"It's always good to get a (season-opening win), especially against a 6A school," added the coach. "It builds our confidence."

SOUTH MEDFORD 7, THURSTON 0 — Senior forwards Beto Cortez and Logan Warr combined for five goals in the rout at Spiegelberg Stadium.

Cortez tallied three goals and Warr had a pair.

South Medford led 4-0 at halftime.

Brian Avila opened the scoring in the sixth minute, then Cortez converted in the 10th and 15th minutes to give South a 3-0 advantage.

Matt Mendoza accounted for the Panthers' other goal.

South posted a 20-3 advantage in shots. Panther senior goalie Skyler Holt recorded the shutout.

The Panthers host Bend at 4 p.m. Friday at Ashland Middle School.

EAGLE POINT 3, NORTH VALLEY 2 — At Merlin, North Valley got on the board first, but Eagle Point responded with three unanswered goals to win the season-opening game for both teams.

Matthew Wessels scored near the 20th minute off a corner kick to give North Valley a 1-0 lead. Eagle Point's Juan Palomares turned a scramble in the box into a goal to tie it just before the half, and Andres Tavarez took a pass from Dario Madera for a one-on-one opportunity and a score to give the Eagles the lead just 10 minutes into the second half.

Tavarez later added an insurance goal off a pass from John Navarro.

North Valley's Tyler Goens scored on a breakaway with under 10 minutes remaining off an assist from Kevin Hagenbach to pull the Knights within 3-2.

MAZAMA 6, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 — At Cave Junction, Mazama had five different players score and roared to a 5-0 lead at halftime in the season opener for both squads.

Mazama scored the first of its five first-half goals in the 14th minute.

The Cavers led 5-0 at the half. Katie Gleffe scored twice and assisted teammate Katie Jenista for another score.

The scoring started with a goal by Shelby Henry in the second minute. Henry took a through-ball pass from Jessica Bath, who had two assists in the game.

Stephanie Pepperling assisted Gleffe for her first goal in the ninth minute and Gleffe scored again in the 30th minute on an assist from Kara Rawlings. Heather Perry scored in the 38th minute from Bath and Jenista added her goal in the 39th minute to close the half.

Alyssa Farber made an unassisted goal in the 45th minute for the only score of the second half.

EAGLE POINT 1, MARSHFIELD 1 — At Coos Bay, Kaylee Tuttle's goal in the 76th minute tied the match for Eagle Point and neither team could break through in the two 10-minute overtime periods.

Ellen Radcliffe sent a crossing pass that bounded through the box and found Tuttle for a close-range effort for the Eagles, who outshot Marshfield 14-1 but couldn't capitalize on the advantage.

Marshfield scored on a breakaway in the 16th minute to open the scoring.

ST. MARY'S 4, MAZAMA 2 — At Klamath Falls, St. Mary's scored three goals in a seven-minute span in the second half to pull away for the season-opening victory.

The Crusaders' Sarah Seus helped turn a tightly contested game in the first half into a rout. She scored in the 53rd minute with an assist from Lindsay Barnum and again in the 58th minute on Kelsey Gross' assist.

Freshman Anna Thorndike put St. Mary's ahead 4-1 with a goal in the 60th minute off the feed from Carlie Irvine.

St. Mary's opened the game with a goal by Mackenzie Krieser in the fourth minute. Krieser received a cross from teammate Nikki Steinsiek for the score.

Mazama tied it in the 17th minute and also scored with 13 minutes to play in the game.

St. Mary's had 18 shots on goal to four for Mazama.

SUMMIT 3, ROSEBURG 1 — At Roseburg, Summit fired 15 shots on goal to just three for Roseburg in the season opener for both teams.

Roseburg's Brooke Strawn opened the scoring in the eighth minute off Brittney Brock's assist. Summit's Eve Hess took advantage of a Roseburg defensive miscue in the 26th minute for the tying score after the Indians failed to clear the ball and it ended up in Hess' possession.

Haley Estopre scored in the 77th minute to break the tie and Summit added one more late goal in the contest.
