Investigators have identified a man found dead on the Bear Creek Greenway near Central Point on Thursday and are asking for the public's help in what they are calling a homicide case.

Troy Dean Carney, 44, was found dead in a sleeping bag off a path that leads away from the Greenway between the Central Point freeway interchange and Table Rock Road, the Jackson County Sheriff's Department said. An autopsy was done Friday, but the cause of death and other details of the investigation aren't being released, officials said.

"This case is being investigated as a homicide," the sheriff's department statement today said.

Carney, who has no listed address, had recently returned to the area after a 10-year absence, officials said. He was not contacted in the sheriff's department's sweep of the greenway about two weeks ago, when deputies collected information from transients living along the path to help in identifying them and notifying relatives in case of death or serious injury.

Investigators ask anyone with information about Carney and his activities in the past few weeks to call the sheriff's tip line at 774-8333.
