Penalties ground Eagle Point in loss

EAGLE POINT — What could have been a monster day by Eagle Point all-state receiver Garrett Davis turned to disappointment Friday in a 20-17 nonconference football loss to Henley.

The senior Davis had three long touchdowns negated because of penalties — two on pass plays and one on a punt return — as the Eagles were repeatedly flagged in dropping to 1-1 overall.

Eagle Point was called for 15 penalties worth 130 yards.

"We kicked ourselves in the butt and they found a way to capitalize on it," said Eagles coach Jacob Schauffler.

Even with Eagle Point going in fits and starts, it made a valiant run in the final stages. Quarterback Austin Marlia drove the Eagles the length of the field for a touchdown with 1:59 to play, then they recovered the ensuing onside kick.

But, as happened all evening, jubilation turned to despair when the recovery was wiped out because the Eagles were offsides. They tried again and Henley covered.

Davis did score on a 1-yard run, but both passes called back were more than 50 yards and his punt return of 73 yards came back on a clipping penalty. Two of the plays were early in the second quarter before the Hornets got on the scoreboard.

NORTH VALLEY 13, GOLD BEACH 12 — At Gold Beach, North Valley stopped Gold Beach's two-point conversion with 23 seconds to play and denied the defending Class 3A state champions a come-from-behind victory.
