Bend topples South boys

ASHLAND — Bend took advantage of a couple of defensive lapses and recorded a 2-0 boys soccer victory over South Medford Friday at Ashland Middle School.

"We came out a bit flat today and didn't snap out of it," said South coach Dave Kaufman. "Bend took advantage. All in all, we were pretty evenly matched with them, but this is a good wake-up call for our boys. They went into this with maybe a little bit of extra confidence, but Bend is always a good side and they took advantage of a couple of mistakes."

The Panthers dropped to 1-1 in nonconference play.

Bend's Austin Crook scored in the 30th minute to give the Lava Bears a 1-0 halftime lead.

They increased it to 2-0 in the 60th minute when South failed to clear the ball in front of its goal, and Zach Reynolds pounced for another score.

"They hopped on a couple of miscues in the back," said Kaufman.

Each team had about 10 shots on goal, he said.

NORTH MEDFORD 2, MOUNTAIN VIEW 2 — North Medford came out firing against Mountain View but couldn't maintain two different leads and tied in its season opener at home.

The Tornado's Grant Anderson scored on a penalty kick in the ninth minute after Dustin Torrey was tripped in the box, and the lead held up well into the second half.

The Cougars' tallied on a free kick by Henry Medrano in the 68th minute, but two minutes later, North's Jorge Maldonado headed in a cross from Anderson.

Mountain View's Austin Kihs scored in the 74th minute to knot the score for good.

PHOENIX 1, PACIFIC 0 — At Langlois, Phoenix dominated but managed just a second-half goal by Frankie Torres.

Torres, a senior forward, received a crossing pass in the box from senior Jose Rivera and deposited a shot from 6 yards out into the net at the 53rd minute

Pirate midfielders Danny Diardina, Lalo DeLaCruz and Rafael Castreon were primarily responsible for keeping the ball in the Phoenix offensive end.

Phoenix registered 20 shots to one for Pacific.

HIDDEN VALLEY 5, SOUTH UMPQUA 0 — At Murphy, Hidden Valley scored four goals in the second half to pull away in its nonconference season opener.

Robbie Erkeneff gave the Mustangs a 1-0 halftime lead following an assist by Kevin Payne.

Payne later tallied, as did Josiah Iwamizu, Alex Dole and Blake Andreasen.

Jason Kellogg and Cody Jones sparked the defense.

MOUNTAIN VIEW 4, NORTH MEDFORD 2 — At Bend, North Medford led 1-0 at halftime, but host Mountain View exploded for three goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half to take control in the Black Tornado's season opener.

Senior Jessica Reid scored on a penalty kick in about the 30th minute for North when Sarah Chambers was fouled in the box.

After the Cougars grabbed a 3-1 second-period lead, Chambers, a freshman forward, beat two defenders and drilled in a shot from about 10 yards to cut the Black Tornado deficit to 3-2 with 13 minutes to go.

Mountain View tallied again with two minutes left.

The Cougars had an advantage in shots on goal, while North took a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.

BEND 2, SOUTH MEDFORD 0 — At Bend, Ali Trueblood and Katelynn Cockrum scored in the first 30 minutes and Bend made the goals stand up in nonconference play.

Goalie Emily Miller got the shutout for Bend.
