Sutherlin upsets Cascade Christian

CENTRAL POINT — Cascade Christian got off to an explosive start in its season opener against Sutherlin.

But the Challengers bogged down after that and the visiting Bulldogs sprung a 14-7 upset Saturday in nonconference football at Crater High's Dutch Meyer Field.

Jake Gilman's 2-yard touchdown run with less than two minutes remaining in the game capped a 57-yard, nine-play drive that gave Sutherlin a 14-7 lead.

Tyler Stickler provided Cascade Christian good field position by returning the ensuing kickoff to the Challenger 47. A 20-yard pass play from Jake Gettman to Tyler Marshall got the Challengers down to the Sutherlin 3-yard line. But three plays later, Gettman was forced to scramble and was tackled at the 2 as the game ended.

"We had three chances to punch it in," said Cascade Christian assistant coach Jon Gettman. "We just couldn't finish the job."

After receiving the game's opening kickoff, Cascade Christian took the lead right away when Conner Kirkpatrick went 63 yards for a touchdown on the third play from scrimmage.

"(Kirkpatrick) ran off tackle on the left side, broke a couple of tackles and raced down the sideline for a touchdown," said Jon Gettman. "It was a great way to start, but unfortunately that was it for us."

Sutherlin tied the score 7-all in the second quarter. After taking over at the Challenger 33-yard line on a short punt, the Bulldogs took five plays to score with 10:52 left in the period. Nick Bradley finished the drive from 3 yards out.

The Challengers forced five turnovers — two interceptions and three fumble recoveries — but turned the ball over three times.

Junior safety Ben Joffer provided a spark to the Challengers' defense.

"(Joffer) filled a lot of holes and got a big pick," said Jon Gettman. "He was the most consistent."

Cascade Christian rushed for 147 yards. Kirkpatrick gained 69 yards on eight carries and Stickler rushed 17 times for 62 yards. The Challengers added 51 more through the air.

Sutherlin had 205 yards in offense, with 173 coming on the ground. Gilman was the Bulldogs' leading rusher with 55 yards, while Kyle Jaukkuri added 53.

"We just got beat up front," said Jon Gettman. "Physically we got manhandled. Other than the first series, we had nothing."

ST. MARY'S 12, RIDDLE 7 — St. Mary's junior quarterback Connor O'Boyle tossed two touchdown passes and then made a key interception late in the game to help the Crusaders preserve the season-opening victory at Spiegelberg Stadium.

In the first quarter, O'Boyle hit Logan Brooks on a 19-yard touchdown pass, then later in the period found Jeff Reeder for a 48-yard scoring strike.

Sophomore running back Dane Irving paced the St. Mary's ground game that picked up 129 yards. O'Boyle was 4-of-9 passing for 117 yards and one interception.

O'Boyle's interception at the Crusader 45 with about three minutes left in the game ended any Riddle comeback hopes.
