Phoenix boys blow past Brookings

BROOKINGS — It was all about finishing for the Phoenix Pirates in nonconference boys soccer against Brookings-Harbor on Saturday.

The Pirates were productive with their 12 shots on the Bruins' goal and posted a 5-1 victory.

Brookings grabbed the game's initial lead when Anthony Babb took a through ball and scored on a low, hard shot inside the far post six minutes into the match.

Then junior striker Chris Solis turned the momentum for the Pirates.

At the 10-minute mark, Solis scored from 10 yards out off a pass from senior midfielder Rafael Castreon to knot the score 1-all.

"We drew a sigh of relief on that one," Phoenix coach Dennis Flenner said. "It was nice to see us elevate our game after Brookings scored first."

Four minutes later, Solis scored what proved to be the winning goal off a corner kick by team captain Geoff Jensen.

"(Jensen) put the ball hot and low and Chris came running up and flicked it in," said Flenner. "It was one of those sweet finishes."

The Pirates got the all important insurance goal 10 minutes into the second half off another corner kick. This time Danny Diardina put a corner kick on goal and unmarked sophomore defender Andy Buell booted in a shot from close range.

"Buell snuck up on them, we caught them napping," said Flenner. "You need to be shifty if you want to get good opportunities."

Frankie Torres had a hand in the Pirates' final two scores. Torres scored off an assist from Carlos Mena in the 53rd minute, then assisted on a goal by Juan Quintero in extra time.

Phoenix senior goalie Gresham Prehn recorded two saves off seven shots by the Bruins.

Flenner had praise for Solis in getting the Pirates' offense in gear: "Chris took us from losing to winning in just a matter of minutes. Those were hustle goals. He was totalled focused today."

SOUTH MEDFORD 0, MOUNTAIN VIEW 0 — South Medford outshot Mountain View 14-7 but couldn't capitalize during the nonconference tie at Spiegelberg Stadium.

The Panthers moved to 1-1-1 heading into Tuesday's home matchup against Ashland at 7 p.m.

BEND 2, NORTH MEDFORD 1 — After an impressive goal from North Medford freshman Jesus Solorio, it was all Bend, which came away with a nonconference triumph at Hoffbuhr Field.

Solorio connected on a mid-air kick off a header pass from Jorge Maldonado in the 32nd minute to give the Black Tornado (0-1-1) a brief lead.

The Lava Bears answered in the 48th minute on a penalty kick to even the score. With six minutes remaining, Bend banged in the winning goal on a breakaway.

First-year starting goalkeeper Ryan Nicholson registered seven saves for the Black Tornado. The Lava Bears outshot the Black Tornado, 11-7.

ASHLAND 4, ROSEBURG 1 1 — At Ashland, Ashland put on a show with a couple of stylish goals and took control after an early goal from Roseburg in a nonconference match.

Nate Roupp's header on a pass from Adam Pavlich in the 31st minute pulled the Grizzlies even with Roseburg. Six minutes later, Roupp drove in a penalty kick to put Ashland (2-0) ahead, 2-1.

Roupp returned the favor to Pavlich in the 48th minute with a well-placed corner kick, which Pavlich headed into the back of the net.

The Grizzlies' Dakota Wolff tallied in the 74th minute on a setup from Kevin Cassidy.

Goalkeeper Weston Overland recorded four saves for the Grizzlies.

District 3

ST. MARY'S 4, ROGUE RIVER 1 — At Rogue River, freshman Harrison Leep came off the bench to provide a spark for St. Mary's with a goal and an assist in the season and District 3-opener.

Mark Raniele scored in the 25th minute off a Leep assist, and Leep scored 10 minutes later off an assist from fellow freshman Reid Arne.

In the 39th minute, senior Bay Gross buried a header into the net off a corner kick by Raniele.

Rogue River tallied its lone goal 10 minutes into the second half, but St. Mary's answered 15 minutes later on a left-footed effort by Kelly Mosley.

Lou Arne and Jeremy Kotler helped the Crusaders control the Chieftains on defense.
