South Medford settles for tie

BEND — South Medford controlled much of the action but had to settle for a 0-0 tie against Bend High in nonconference girls soccer Saturday.

"We maintained possession but didn't get enough shots on goal," South Medford coach Terry Fretz said. "We need to shoot a little more. The girls were too patient."

The Panthers received strong play from senior midfielders Anna Sours and Melissa Boyd.

"Our midfielders dictated the pace of the game," said Fretz. "They switched the ball from one side to the other side where we had open players. Through the course of the game, it really wore them out."

Fretz estimates South was playing in the Lava Bear's end of the field most of the second half, but didn't get enough shots on goal.

"We had a couple of opportunities where we had enough room for a shot but decided to pass it off," said Fretz. "We need to shoot a little more."

The Panthers (0-1-1) received effective goalkeeping from seniors Anna Tozier and Amanda Carraway, who is coming back from an ACL injury last year. Tozier came up big in the first half when she came out of goal to deny Bend a dangerous one-on-one scoring chance.

"I'm encouraged," said Fretz. "Our whole thought process is every half we want to improve. Today in the second half we took it to a whole other level. We just have to work on finishing."

BEND 1, NORTH MEDFORD 0 — At Bend, one inability to clear the ball proved to be the difference for North Medford as Bend took advantage for the lone goal of the nonleague tilt.

The Black Tornado tried in vain to clear a loose ball in the 48th minute as several Bend players converged on it and one player was able to toe the ball into the goal.

Kendra McMillen had six saves for North Medford (0-2), which trailed 10-8 in shots on goal and played a better all-around game over Friday's effort.

ASHLAND 1, ROSEBURG 0 — At Roseburg, Ashland capitalized on a Roseburg own-goal early in the first half and the teams battled evenly the rest of the way.

The Grizzlies' (1-1) goal came off a corner kick in the 11th minute. A Roseburg defender went up to head the ball away from the net but the ball hit off her chest and went into the goal.

In just her second start, freshman Rinchen Thomas posted a shutout in goal for the Grizzlies.

Roseburg (0-2) couldn't convert on a breakaway in the opening minute, then had multiple shots and almost tied the game in the 65th minute.

Ashland took 14 shots to 11 for the Indians. Roseburg senior keeper Marah Baker recorded 11 saves.

HIDDEN VALLEY 9, KLAMATH UNION 0 — At Murphy, Jessie Hanger had a hat trick and Katie Figoni posted a shutout in goal for defending state champion Hidden Valley.

Dana Powell found the back of the net twice for the Knights (1-0), while Jamie Ball, Ariana Fleishman and Ellie Misner each scored a goal.

MAZAMA 3, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 1 — Mazama used three goals in the first half to stave off a second-half surge by Cascade Christian in the nonleague match at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park.

Solmoy Austbo, McKenzie Palmeton and Maria Dominguez each scored for Mazama to take a 3-0 lead into intermission over the admittedly nervous Challengers in their season opener.

Cascade Christian's Becky Eustace scored from 35 yards out in the 56th minute after Amelia Martin had worked the ball up the right side and then sent a pass back to Eustace.

Jenna George stopped a penalty shot by Mazama in the 71st minute for the Challengers' defensive highlight. Mazama outshot the Challengers 15-9.
