PHOENIX — Chris Kammel tossed three touchdown passes to Skyler Reagan as Phoenix romped past Brookings-Harbor 28-6 in nonconference football at Jack Woodward Stadium Friday.
"It was a good team effort," said Phoenix coach Walt Bazylewicz. "We were dinged up so we had to have a lot of guys shuffling in on both sides of the ball."
The Pirates got off to a quick start with scoring drives on their first two possessions.
Reagan hauled in his first of three scoring passes on a 10-yard TD from Kammel on the Pirates' initial possession. Then Wayne Holmes raced 25 yards into the end zone on a toss sweep to give Phoenix a 14-0, first-quarter lead.
"We came out executing nicely, especially in the running game," said Bazylewicz. "Wayne (Holmes) is a speedy guy and he was able to get outside on some runs."
In the second quarter, Reagan got deep for a 55-yard scoring strike as the Pirates went into halftime with a 20-6 advantage.
"We were effective with our short passing game and caught them off guard with a couple of deep balls, too," said Bazylewicz. "We thought we could take advantage of Skyler's height and he was able to go up and get a couple of balls."
Kammel was 11-of-18 passing for 191 yards and no interceptions, while Reagan had four catches for 102 yards. Holmes and Armando Ledesma combined for 74 of the Pirates' 88 net rushing yards.
The Bruins were limited to 123 yards in offense. Running back Dustin Paradis accounted for most of that with 103 yards on 18 carries. Brookings completed just one pass for no gain.
"They have a couple of young quarterbacks and we were able to shut down their passing game," said Bazylewicz. "We didn't give them much time to throw.
"We were rolling guys in on our line and at linebacker," continued Bazylewicz. "I was proud how some of our reserve players stepped up and shined when they got a chance to play."
