Grizzly girls roll over South Albany

Ashland gets goals from four different players during the nonconference rout

ASHLAND — Ashland spent nearly the entire game in South Albany's half of the field and rolled to a 4-0 nonconference girls soccer win Friday at North Mountain Park.

Four players scored for the Grizzlies (2-3) in the first half, then Ashland pulled the ball out and focused on fundamentals in the second half. It outshot the Rebels 45-1, said coach Eric Wolff.

"We played well," he said. In the second half, he added, "We worked on more crosses, volleys and headers. There were tons of times where we were close but never quite put it in. Their keeper did a great job, too. She touched the ball a lot."

Chloe Deckwar scored first for the Grizzlies, sending in a corner kick in the 15th minute.

Heather Case and Jubilee Sharpe then scored within a minute of each other. Case got a steal and flew a shot in from 20 yards out in the 23rd minute. Sharpe then tallied off a pass across the penalty box by Deckwar.

Kelsey McKinnis scored just before halftime on a cross from Carolyn Thomas.

Kai Yearsley didn't score but played well for Ashland, which opens Southern Sky Conference play Tuesday at Mazama.

"She had a lot of touches on the ball and did a great job of distributing the ball," said Wolff of the midfielder. "Then the whole defense allowed us to keep possession of the ball the whole time. Everyone did well back there, too."
