Seus, Krieser ignite Crusaders in win

There's no question of the impact Sarah Seus and Mackenzie Krieser make when they are on the field for the St. Mary's girls soccer team.

But perhaps most impressive on Tuesday was the Crusaders' fluent passing game which led to a flurry of offensive opportunities as St. Mary's went on to a 3-0 District 6 victory over Cascade Christian at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park.

"St. Mary's was very clinical about their passing," said Challengers coach Mick Power. "They really played some pretty soccer. They have to be commended on their passing skills because that was our downfall right there."

Although she did not score a goal, Krieser played her best game in two years according to Crusaders coach Dave Potter.

The Challengers (3-3, 2-2 Dist. 6) could never chase down Krieser when she had the ball. She helped the Crusaders get 17 shots on goal and made her impact felt in the 43rd minute.

Krieser's direct shot deflected off the hands of Challengers goalkeeper Jenna George and Seus was there for her second goal of the contest.

"She gave us a lot of problems," said Power of Krieser. "We really had a hard time containing her on that left side."

Later in the second half, St. Mary's Anna Thorndike hit a low shot into the left corner of the goal on an assist by Abby Steinsiek.

George had 10 saves for Cascade Christian, which had nine shots on goal.

Gina Barbieri worked in goal for the Crusaders in the first half.

PHOENIX 2, ROGUE RIVER 0 — At Talent, goalkeeper Kourtney Scoggins made four saves and had a rare assist to help Phoenix (1-4, 1-4 Dist. 6) to its first win of the season.

Makayla Hickman scored the first goal of the game in the 12th minute and Sophia Pankowski took Scoggins' nearly 60-yard kick from the Pirates' goal in for another score in the 30th minute. Phoenix's Carlee Storey, usually a midfielder, moved to sweeper and helped thwart Rogue River (0-5, 0-4 Dist. 6), which managed just five shots to 15 for Phoenix.

HIDDEN VALLEY 3, HENLEY 2, SO — At Klamath Falls, Carlee Nelson scored in the 77th minute to send the game to overtime and Katie Figoni made the decisive save in the shootout to give Hidden Valley the District 6 victory.

Jessi Hanger put Hidden Valley (5-1, 3-1 Dist. 6) in the lead with a goal in the sixth minute, but Henley scored goals in the 15th and 17th minutes to pull ahead before Nelson's goal. Neither team scored in overtime and Figoni guessed correctly by diving to her left on Henley's fifth shot in the shootout to clinch the win.

Southern Sky

ASHLAND 3, MAZAMA 0 — At Klamath Union, Chloe Deckwar scored two first-half goals, including one on a corner kick, to lead Ashland to the SSC-opening victory.

Deckwar tallied in the fourth and 15th minutes. Her first goal was assisted by Katelyn Walker. Riley Smith scored in the 77th minute for the Grizzlies (3-3).

CRATER 3, KLAMATH UNION 1 — At Central Point, Caitlin Sprenger scored in the 67th minute to give Crater an insurance goal in its SSC opener.

Kayla Burns and Erika Williams, on an assist from Taylor McGee, accounted for the other goals for the Comets (2-4-2).

Veronica Miller scored for KU in the 62nd minute.

Nonconference

NORTH VALLEY 6, EAGLE POINT 1 — At Merlin, Natalie Goens and Mia Robles each had a goal and an assist to power North Valley to the nonconference victory.

The Knights (4-1), who led 3-1 at halftime, also got scores from Nicole Goens, Brooke Fray, Ashley Moore and Megan Knitter.

Kaylee Tuttle tallied for Eagle Point (2-2-2).
