Better safe than sorry is a mantra few follow
Given the attention NFL teams received by pulling out their prominent players late in the season or not playing them at all, one wonders why that...
YREKA, Calif. — Austin Rowley isn't your prototypical post player.
But Eagle Point's powerful senior — he was listed at 6-foot-1, 260 pounds as an all-conference lineman in football — gets results others would long for.
Rowley blended strength and finesse to amass 19 points, 11 rebounds and five assists as the Eagles defeated Mount Shasta, 53-47, Saturday in the Yreka Tournament.
Eagle Point is 2-1 on the season.
"He's a big body who can play inside and outside," said Eagles first-year coach Brian Winter. "He's been a stabilizer for us. We're very young, and he's one of two seniors on the squad. He just brings a little veteran experience to the table."
The Eagles led by three at halftime, then established control and won the third quarter 19-10 for a 47-35 advantage.
Logan Winter had three fouls and sat for the early part of the period. He then came on and drained two 3-pointers as the Eagles built a cushion. Rowley had a field goal and was 3-for-3 at the line in the third.
"We put together a nice little run," said coach Winter. "That really was the difference in the game. Then we kind of let the air out of the ball in the fourth quarter as we were trying to protect the lead."
Eagle Point attempted only eight shots in the final period.
Austin Marlia led EP with five assists.
