PHILOMATH — The Phoenix boys basketball team put a value on patience and rebounding Monday night, and both paid off as the Pirates methodically pulled away from Philomath for a 35-24 victory.
Skyler Reagan scored a game-high 12 points and Juan Sauceda added 11 for Phoenix, which opted to work on minimizing possessions by taking a minimum of 35 seconds off the clock on each offensive possession.
"We probably could've scored a little bit more but we wanted to be patient on offense and take what they gave us," said Phoenix coach Brian Miller, noting that several possessions went as long as one minute.
"On the defensive end, we just located all their shooters in our man zone," he added. "The key was they got one shot and they were done. I think they got three offensive rebounds the whole game. I think we did a pretty good job on the defensive end."
The key to the defensive effort came from the Pirates' interior defenders, with Ben Crichton, Jeff Bohn, Austin Campoy and Kyle Treadway doing a solid job on the boards.
Phoenix (2-2) opened a 17-10 lead by halftime and outscored the Warriors 13-6 in the fourth quarter — all six of those points coming from the free-throw line.
