Challengers snap Mustangs' streak

December 10, 2008

MURPHY — Top-ranked Cascade Christian opened its boys basketball season Tuesday against a team that hadn't lost at home in five years.

And Cascade Christian responded in impressive fashion against Class 4A Hidden Valley.

The 3A Challengers pulled away in the final quarter to post a 53-42 victory and end the Mustangs' 43-game home winning streak.

"We scheduled them because they play good, pressure man defense," said Cascade Christian coach Brian Morse. "We wanted to really step up our nonleague games to really push us."

Cascade Christian held a two-point lead entering the fourth quarter, then went on a 7-0 burst to begin the period.

"When we made our run, our defensive pressure led to some transition baskets," said Morse. "It was a game of runs. Every time they would close the gap we would extend the lead to eight or 10 points."

Senior point guard Jarrod Hess scored nine of 15 points in the third quarter to pace the Challengers. Hess added seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.

"Hess hit some big shots for us," said Morse. "In the first half he was penetrating against their pressure defense. Then he pulled up for some medium-range jumpers in the third."

Senior center Dustin Hutley, a transfer for North Medford, gave the Challengers a lift with nine points, all coming in the first half.

Scott Morse contributed 14 points, including 6 of 7 from the line in the fourth quarter, and had four blocked shots for the Challengers.

"(Morse) struggled with his shots early," said the Cascade Christian coach of his son, "but he knocked down those free throws in the fourth quarter to help preserve the lead."

Cascade junior forward Colton Cochran grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

For Hidden Valley, Todd Woodrum posted a team-best 12 points and Dylan Armanino chipped in 10.

"It's tough losing our home streak," said Hidden Valley coach Robert Jackson. "Cascade Christian is a very good team. They play hard and play the right way. They earned a good win tonight."
