Ashland, Thurston split dual

SPRINGFIELD — Robin Haase and Lucas Opgenorth contributed to six victories between them as the Ashland boys defeated Thurston in a nonconference boys swimming dual meet at Willamalane Pool Thursday.

The Grizzly boys defeated the Colts, 140-123, but Thurston was able to turn the tables on Ashland's girls team with a 1521/2-931/2 triumph.

Haase won the 50 and 100 freestyle, while Opgenorth picked up victories in the 100 butterfly and the 500 freestyle. Haase and Opgenorth both swam legs on the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

In girls, Ashland's Kaylee Tracy registered wins in the 100 and 200 freestyle and was on the victorious Grizzly 400 freestyle relay team.

Boys Basketball

CHILOQUIN 65, ROGUE RIVER 52 — At Rogue River, Chiloquin jumped out to an early lead and never trailed in the quarterfinals of the Chieftain Holiday Classic.

The Panthers came out aggressively and led 22-8 after the first quarter.

Junior guard Cole Watson paced Rogue River (3-2) with 16 points and junior guard Brendan Schoner added 11.

Rogue River's leading rebounder Kelly White suffered a dislocated foot in the first quarter.

Chad Rich and Liston Case each had 18 points to spark Chiloquin.

Rogue River will play the North Medford JV at 5 p.m. today.

HIDDEN VALLEY 72, YREKA 43 — At Mt. Shasta City, junior wing Todd Woodrum tallied a game-high 26 points to pace Hidden Valley to an opening-round victory in the eight-team Mount Shasta Tournament.

The Mustangs (1-1) face Weed in the semifinals at 9:30 tonight.

Senior forward Brian Mahuna added 14 points and grabbed six rebounds for Hidden Valley and Cameron Frey dished out six assists. Woodrum also came up with four steals.

Katey Choukalos led KU with 16 points and Lyssa Rudd added 10 points and four steals. Michelle Silva chipped in with 10 rebounds and Paige Holloway had six for the Pelicans.
