Crater heats up late to top GP

December 17, 2008

GRANTS PASS — When Josh Lokeno heats up, so, too, does the Crater boys basketball team.

At least that was the case Tuesday night when the Comets traveled to Grants Pass and churned out a 43-33 nonconference victory.

Lokeno had five steals and scored 10 of his game-high 15 points in the fourth quarter to help Crater (7-0) pull away by outscoring the Cavemen 21-13 in the final frame.

"I think we finally got a little bit of a spurt there in the fourth quarter," said Crater coach Troy McNichols. "We had kind of a cold shooting night again but our defense created some opportunities and we were able to create somewhat of a cushion."

Travis Robbins added nine points and five steals and Mike Hicks had 10 rebounds and six points for the Comets, who converted 8 of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter and played solid defense to keep GP at bay.

"Our defense is generating just enough for us to get victories right now," said McNichols.

David Connelly had 11 points and Matt Nottingham added seven to lead the Cavemen (3-2).
