Oregon's Chinese history is topic of music, lecture at Southern Oregon University

The Chinese Year of the Ox will be the focus of music and a lecture at Southern Oregon University's Hannon Library at noon Feb 6.

Jeff Barlow, a professor at Pacific University, will discuss the history of the Chinese in Oregon, and Kathy Gong Greene will perform her "Songs of a Chinese Family."

The free lecture and performance are part of a weekend of festivities sponsored by the Southern Oregon Chinese Cultural Association, featuring events in Ashland, Medford and Jacksonville.

Barlow is Matsushita Chair for East Asian Studies at Pacific and has numerous publications on Asian history, including the books "China Doctor of John Day" and "China in Oregon, A Resource Directory."

Gong Greene is a board member with the Southern Oregon Chinese Cultural Association, and currently serves as its program director. She'll present traditional Chinese songs handed down through her family.

The event will be held in Room 206 of the library at 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland. For more information, call 552-6835. Information on the full slate of events can be found at www.socca.us.
