Tornado defeats Mazama in season opener

Junior pitcher Brady Shipley struck out 11 in five innings and Matt Maurer provided a bases-loaded triple as North Medford opened the baseball season with a 10-2 home victory against Mazama Tuesday.

Shipley picked up the victory after giving up four hits, walking three and allowing two runs. Hayden Wolfe pitched a hitless 12/3 innings of relief.

Wolfe struck out three and walked one.

Maurer broke the game open with a three-run triple in North's five-run sixth inning.

Cody James added one hit, two RBIs and two runs scored for North, while Jordan Ellis had one hit and scored twice. Ellis hasn't played baseball for the Black Tornado since his freshman year.

ASHLAND 14, HENLEY 2 — At Klamath Falls, senior Hayden Miller sparked the Ashland offense with two hits and four RBIs.

Miller highlighted the Grizzlies' six-run fourth with a two-run double.

Ashland starting pitcher Charlie Sebrell tossed two shutout innings and had two hits. Garrett Tygerson followed, registering the victory with a pair of scoreless innings.

DAYS CREEK 9, BUTTE FALLS 8 — At Days Creek, Days Creek scored eight runs in the third and held off a late rally by Butte Falls for the season-opening victory.

Butte Falls scored five runs in the seventh but couldn't pull even. Harley Casillas was 2-for-4 with a double, triple, two runs scored and three RBIs for Butte Falls, while Lehman Adams was 1-for-2 with a double, and Quinten Weaver was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Softball

HENLEY 3, ASHLAND 2 — At Klamath Falls, Amanda Good hit a game-tying two-run triple in the third inning for Ashland, but Henley plated the game-winning run in the fifth in the season opener.

Bella Pribyl took the loss for the Grizzlies. She worked five innings with four strikeouts and one walk.

Henley starter Autumn Nedan had 13 strikeouts in seven innings and was also 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

BUTTE FALLS 11, DAYS CREEK 0 — At Days Creek, junior pitcher Aarika Stephens fired a two-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts, and sophomore Jessica Driskell led the Butte Falls offense with three hits and two RBIs.

Logger catcher Allie Givens added three hits and scored three runs, while Yolanda Ramirez, Beth Sutfin and Mariah Moore had two hits apiece.
