South Medford splits with Summit

BEND — Max Britton's 18th birthday on Saturday was a good one.

The South Medford senior pitcher tossed a six-inning, three-hitter as South Medford defeated Summit of Bend, 11-1, in a game that ended early on the mercy rule.

The Storm bounced back in the second game of the nonconference doubleheader with a 4-2 victory behind pitcher Austin Jones' four-hitter.

Britton enticed 11 groundball outs and needed just 65 pitches in the opener. He also pounded a two-run double in the Panthers' six-run sixth inning.

Jordan Lundgren paced the South attack with three hits and three RBIs. Lundgren delivered a two-run single in the sixth.

Brandon Dollarhide smacked two doubles and scored three runs for the Panthers (1-2).

In Game 2, Josh Havird collected two of South Medford's four hits. Havird provided a RBI single in the third after Dollarhide opened with a single and went to second on a ground out.

Dollarhide walked and scored a run in the first on Bo Walker's RBI single.

SOUTH UMPQUA 9-3, EAGLE POINT 3-2 — At Eagle Point, Eagle Point's three-run rally fell short in the nightcap as South Umpqua went on to sweep the nonconference doubleheader.

One out after Brian Smith's leadoff double, Deric Allen's RBI single cut the Eagles' deficit to one, but he was left stranded after stealing second base and advancing to third on a passed ball.

In the opener, the Lancers scored eight runs in the sixth inning to shut the door on the Eagles (0-2).

Derek Tuttle went 2-for-3 in both games for the Eagles.

PHOENIX 8, ETNA 4 — At Yreka, Calif., Kyle Treadway was 4-for-4 and drove in three runs and Justin Bohn pitched three solid innings as Phoenix placed fifth in the Golden Nugget Tournament.

Bohn gave up two hits, struck out five and walked one for the Pirates (3-1).

Skyler Reagan was 2-for-4 with two doubles and Jordan Decker 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

ILLINOIS VALLEY 5-11, ROGUE RIVER 2-6 — At Rogue River, Illinois Valley took advantage of a handful of passed balls and wild pitches in the first game and scored seven second-inning runs in the nightcap to earn the sweep.

Kelly White and Craig Lee each plated runs in the opener on sacrifice fly balls for Rogue River (1-3). Jon Garcia highlighted the Chieftains in Game 2 with a solo home run to complement two hits apiece by Lee and Michael Freitas.
