Maurer's near no-hitter guides Black Tornado

April 02, 2009

EUGENE — So early into the season, North Medford star pitcher Matt Maurer isn't in top form just yet.

But he could have fooled preseason foe Churchill on Wednesday.

Maurer threw a no-hitter through 42/3 innings before having it spoiled with one out left as the Black Tornado rolled to a 10-0 win at Churchill High School.

The game lasted just five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Maurer had 10 strikeouts but walked six. His only surrendered hit was an infield shot from Churchill's Chris Birch.

In an attempt to preserve Maurer's no-hit bid, third baseman Mark Cokenour dove at Birch's hit, but in part because of wet conditions, the ball squirted from his glove and dribbled to outfielder Brady Shipley.

Maurer forced the ensuing batter to ground out for the final out.

Colin Sowers hit two doubles, the second was a two-out, one-hopper into the left center-field fence, which allowed Chris Bradshaw to score North's 10th run.

Sowers went 2-for-3 and drove in two with Bradshaw going 4-for-4 and scoring three times.

Cody James added a two-run single for the Black Tornado (7-1), which doesn't open Southwest Conference play until April 14.
