South Medford drops pair to North Eugene

April 03, 2009

South Medford suffered a pair of hard-luck loses in windy, chilly conditions to visiting North Eugene in nonconference softball Thursday.

North Eugene outlasted the Panthers 5-2 in 10 innings in the opener, then completed the sweep with an 8-6 victory at U.S. Cellular Community Park.

Senior pitcher Dominique Newman, who went the distance for South Medford in the opener, allowed just one unearned run. Newman also tossed three shutout innings of relief in the nightcap.

The Highlanders scored three unearned runs after two were out and no one on in the 10th.

The Panthers' runs in Game 1 came on Shyanne Jones' RBI single in the first, and Jones scored in the sixth on an error.

The Panthers (3-6) squandered a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh when Mallory Pacdol opened with a double.

Pacdol, a junior infielder, had two hits for South in the opener.

In Game 2, the Panthers took leads of 2-0 and 3-1.

South Medford scored two runs in the first on an RBI single by Jones and run-scoring double by Hawkins. After the Highlanders scored one run in the second, South answered when Newman came home on a sacrifice fly by Tasha Equitz.

Pacdol belted a three-run homer in the fifth to cut South's deficit to 8-6.

Jones went 3-for-4, and Hawkins had two hits for the Panthers.
