Medalist Powers paces Tornado

CRESWELL — Sunshine Powers was head-and-shoulders above the rest of the field in Monday's Southwest Conference District Tournament, and the North Medford girls golf team was the beneficiary.

The junior carded a 5-over-par 77 and the balanced Black Tornado easily captured the victory at Emerald Valley Golf Club.

Powers' hot start made her the only player to shoot in the 70s. She had two birdies on the front, one was a chip-in from a few feet off the green. She shot a 1-under 35 on the front nine before taking a 6-over 42 on the back.

Her closest competitors were teammates Abby Mann and Abby Perkins — both of whom shot 88.

The Black Tornado scored a 346 as a team, 38 strokes better than runner-up Sheldon.

Katelyn Galante rounded out North Medford's scoring with a 93, the sixth-best score of the day.

SOUTH MEDFORD PLACES SECOND — Brandon Bol lead South Medford with a 7-over 79 to help the Panthers finish second at the Southwest Conference District Tournament at Rogue Valley Country Club.

Also for the Panthers, who shot 337, Malcolm McGeary carded an 84 and James Sherbourne shot 85.

South Eugene won the event with a team score of 330. Sulman Raza shot a 79 for the Axemen.

Cody Stoffel was medalist, shooting a 3-over 75 for Grants Pass.

Hamilton Baehr led North Medford with an 81.

NORTH MEDFORD 12, COTTAGE GROVE 1 — At Cottage Grove, Hayden Wolfe allowed just three hits and his bid for a no-hitter lasted 51/3 innings to key North Medford.

Wolfe allowed one unearned run in the first inning to go with 10 strikeouts and one walk.

Brady Shipley hit a two-run home run in the third inning for the Black Tornado (9-1).

Chris Bradshaw went 3-for-5 while Shipley, Jordan Ellis and Cody James each collected two hits for North.

CRATER 8, HOOVER (CALIF.) 7 — At Fresno, Calif., ninth-ranked Crater used a seventh-inning double down the right-field line by Derek Cartwright to stun Hoover of Fresno, Calif., in the opening game of the 40th annual Easter Baseball Classic.

Crater (7-2) trailed 7-2 but used a five-run fifth inning to tie the game, highlighted by a two-run double by Christian Massey.

Kos Ray drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the seventh and scored from first on Cartwright's hit.

Bryce Crawford was 3-for-4 and Massey 2-for-4 for Crater, which plays Woodside High of California at 1 p.m. today and then nearby Lemoore High at 4 in the 30-team tournament.
