Maurer, Black Tornado breeze by Eagles

April 09, 2009

Matt Maurer was overpowering on the mound and North Medford used a seven-run sixth inning to separate from Eagle Point for a 10-0 nonleague victory at North Medford High.

Maurer, a left-handed junior, struck out 11 with only one walk in his 79-pitch effort. His only hit allowed came in the third inning, when Eagle Point speedster Garrett Davis beat out a high chopper to second baseman Chris Bradshaw. A night before, Davis won the 100-meter dash for the Eagles' track team in 11.07 seconds.

The Black Tornado (10-1) led 3-0 until the seven-run sixth halted the game due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Mark Cokenour was 2-for-3 and Hayden Wolfe 2-for-4 with one RBI for North Medford, while Maurer had a double and drove in a run after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth.
