Reeves propels Crater to sweep of Ashland

April 12, 2009

CENTRAL POINT — Brittany Reeves struck out 17 batters and hit her first varsity home run Saturday as Crater swept a doubleheader from Ashland, 5-3 and 9-2, in the Southern Sky Conference openers for both teams at Don Faber Memorial Field.

Reeves allowed 12 hits in earning both wins, striking out at least one batter in 12 of the 14 innings she pitched. She walked just two, while her Ashland counterparts issued 15 walks.

In the opener, Tara Ruvalcaba's bases-loaded bloop single to left in the bottom of the sixth inning scored three runs as the two-time defending Class 5A champion Comets (4-8, 2-0 SSC) erased a 3-1 deficit against Ashland ace Bella Pribyl.

The Grizzlies (8-6, 0-2) had taken a 3-1 lead in the top of the sixth on Amanda Good's two-run double and a single by Rose Marston. Ashland had four of its five hits in that inning.

But a single and three walks — one coming with the bases loaded — set the stage for Ruvalcaba's game-winning hit.

Pribyl struggled with her control again in the second game, allowing six runs (four earned) and walking three in just 11/3 innings. Pribyl walked nine in 71/3 innings overall, taking the loss in both games. Ashland has lost three straight and four of its last five.

Crater scored six times on just two hits in the second after the Grizzlies committed three errors in the inning, and six in the game. Reliever Hayley Ross also struggled with control, walking six in 42/3 innings. She also surrendered the solo home run to Reeves leading off the sixth inning.

Good, Marston and Ross each had hits in both games for Ashland. Ruvalcaba, Reeves and Kayla Hopkinson each had two hits on the day for Crater.
